How to find a target Group?

If you follow our blog, you have certainly came across the concept of target group. If you run your own business, or you’re just interested in marketing, you definitely have to establish, who your audience is, as otherwise it will be difficult for you to reach people interested in your product. Of course, you can target everyone with your ad, but is your budget sufficient to reach such a wide audience? Probably not. Read this post till the end and you will find out how to narrow  your target down and run an effective marketing campaign.

What is target group?

Target group is basically a group of people, who you want to reach with your ads. In other words, those are the people, who are potentially interested in buying your sales offer. Your audience can be broad or narrow, depending on how big the market is and your niche, however, the main rule is that the more specific the group is, the more effective the campaign will be.

Why should you create a target group?

target group

Sounds promising, but why would you do it? It’s simple, you want to sell your product to as many people as possible, as this brings you the profit. It doesn’t mean the bigger the group, the more you sell. You can spend a great deal of money and earn nothing. Why? It doesn’t matter how many people see your ad. It is important to show the ad to the people who are in your target group, or the community interested in a certain niche. If you sell female hygiene products, you wouldn’t target men, as they simply don’t need them. So how to establish, who belongs to your target audience?

How to create target groups?

In order to create a target audience for your business, see who buys your products, reads your blog, follows your content, etc. What do they have in common? Try to match them with a category. Those categories might be:

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Location

  • Marital status

  • Education

If you categorize your present customers, you should think about what problems they might have and if your product can solve them. Also, think about their budget and if they can afford to buy what you offer.

Creating and using a target group has a number of perks, for example:

  • Increasing sales

  • Ads are tailored to the recipient and that makes them more effective

  • Knowledge about target groups helps you to plan your marketing budget

  • You build long term relationships with your clients

Where to look for the information?

If you’re not really sure, who might be interested in your product, or your audience is really broad and diverse, you can use Google Analytics. It’s a free tool for the people who have a Google account. You can use it to generate reports on people who use your site, blog, or online shop. Besides information on how much time they spend on your site, the number of page views etc., you can also check the demographic, like gender, age or region. The system is based on cookies, that is small files, stored on the user’s computer, who has to agree on using them. Google has a great “first steps” site for beginners, which shows the information about the service and how to use it.

You can also use a search engine in order to find places, where you can find your potential clients. How to do it? Type the words connected with your niche to the search bar and see what comes up. Those could be for example names of your products. The results will help you to establish who searches for this kind of products and is willing to pay for them.

How to use target group in marketing?

If you have already selected your target group, it’s worth to know, what to do to make your advertisement as attractive as possible. How to do it? Find out, what problems and needs this group. Your commercial should be the promise of solving the problems and respond to their needs. Also, pay attention to what their budget might be. Do those people look for savings, where they can, or maybe they can pay a little bit extra for the product if it fits certain criteria? If it’s the second group, find out what they are looking for in the product, it the price is higher. You can find out this kind of information by interacting with your audience, for example by creating polls on Facebook and Instagram. If you don’t know if the product will sell, you can test the waters by starting a pre-sale, or try a dropshipping model.

To sum up

The knowledge you have about your target group is crucial in planning every marketing campaign. Directing your ads to a certain group of people has a number of advantages, for example saving money on ads and making the most of your strategy.

I hope you liked today’s post. Let me know if you have already selected your target audience for your business! Have a nice day!
